Landsvirkjun, Iceland’s national power company, has launched a procurement procedure for the supply of electro-mechanical equipment for the expansion of the 150 MW Sigalda hydropower station. The expansion aims to add 65 MW to the existing capacity, bringing the total to 215 MW. Bids are sought by April 28, 2025.
The scope of the contract includes a generating unit consisting of one 65 MW Francis turbine and generator, along with steel spiral case and a steel draft tube liner. Basic unit auxiliaries and control systems, as well as installation works in the existing powerhouse, are also part of the contract. The work is expected to commence in November 2025 and be completed by the end of 2027, with the new unit scheduled to begin operation in 2028.
The existing 150 MW hydropower station has been operational since 1978 and produces approximately 920 GWh annually. Its infrastructure includes the Sigalda dam, a reservoir covering 14 km², and a tailrace canal linking it to the Hrauneyjafoss hydropower station. Denmark-based engineering firm COWI was awarded a contract for the design of this expansion project in March.
