Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a state-owned Indian steel company, has announced a significant investment to more than double the capacity of its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). The proposed INR 30,000 crore investment will increase the plant’s capacity to almost 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The expansion project, set to take place on about 1,200 acres of land on the plant’s southeast side, includes the construction of a new raw material processing facility, a coke oven stamp charge battery, a sinter plant, a thin slab caster-direct rolling machine, a cold rolling mill, a silicon mill, and logistics infrastructure. Additionally, the project will establish a new steel melting shop and blast furnace.

The expansion is expected to supply about one-fourth of SAIL’s intended production capacity of 35 MTPA by 2030. This increased capacity will significantly boost supplies to various industries such as defense, oil and gas, and automotive sectors. The project is part of SAIL's broader strategy to enhance its competitive position in the global steel market.

The investment underscores SAIL's commitment to modernizing its facilities and increasing its production capabilities. With the expansion complete, RSP will play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for steel products across India and beyond. This development is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and job creation in the region.
